Last Monday, I attended one of CSE Seminar on crowd wisdom. The seminar was a talk given by Ting Wang who a researcher for IBM Research Center. His talk was on the idea that using big data collection from the crowd some useful information can be extracted to form what is known as “wisdom of crowds”. During his talk, he used Amazon rating system as an example on how this can be accomplished. For example, sometimes we as consumers use Amazon rating system to make a decision on a product. Either we decide to buy it or not. For his research, he used the 28 million ratings spanning over 18 years on over 1.7 million products from Amazon as an exemplary case to conduct his research to model this herding effect. The goal of his research is to untangle manipulations and bias to provide greater insight and work towards creating wisdom of the crowd platforms.
